THE CITIZEN’S GUIDE TO FIGHTING GOVERNMENT  <lfb@panix.com>

introduction by Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan

Governments stop taxing and otherwise oppressing only when

enough outraged people fight back.  This practical book tells how

to do it.

The authors explain how to form a political action group.

They talk about timing your attack on an important issue… how

best to name your group… 6 keys to setting strategic goals…

how to assemble the “brain trust” you will need… whom to pick

for your board of directors… 6 ways to find an effective

spokesman.

The authors provide specific advice about raising money…

how to tap major contributors… 10 rules for successful fund

raising letters… the sequence of 11 points covered in most fund

raising letters… 11 recommendations for important details which

affect results from fund raising letters, like letter length, how

it’s printed, choice of paper and ideal signer.  4 examples of

successful fund raising letters included.

The authors tell how to get publicity… 6 ways a news

conference can attract reporters and get coverage… 9 steps to

setting up a successful news conference… 5 elements of a good

media package… how to develop attention-grabbing “factoids”…

how to dress for TV coverage… how to conduct a demonstration

likely to get coverage… how to prepare for jail, if going there

will help dramatize your cause… how to protect your group

against 60 Minutes style “ambush” reporters… 12 guidelines for

managing media relations… how to write press releases that get

attention… a hot tip for generating radio publicity…

how to carry out a cost-effective advertising campaign… how to

control budgets.

Just about all the practical details of running an effective

political action group are here… what you must know about the

single most important operational tool… how to write effective

brochures… how to organize a good speakers bureau… how to

motivate people to vote… how to take advantage of the Freedom

of Information Act… how to fight bureaucratic rules… how to

deal with politicians.  If you really want to make a difference,

this is the book for you.

/Online counseling  –  What You Should Know When You Log On
The International Society for Mental Health Online (recently released principles to help protect therapists and consumers communicating online. The principles include:
     – The client should be informed about the process, potential risks and benefits of the service, safeguards against risks, and alternatives to the service.
     – Clients should be told that misunderstandings are possible. They should be told how quickly therapists will respond.
     – The client should know the name of the counselor, the counselor’s qualifications (including degree, license and certification), and any special training or degrees. The client should be told how to confirm this information with relevant institutions (such as the state licensing board).
     – The counselor should remain within his or her boundaries of competence, and not attempt to address a problem online if he or she would not attempt to address the same problem in person.
     – The counselor should meet any necessary requirements (such as state licensing) to provide services where he or she is located and, if necessary, where the client is located.
     – The counselor and client should agree on the frequency and mode of communication, method for determining the fee, the estimated cost to the client, and the method of payment.
     – The counselor should adequately evaluate the client before providing services.
     – The confidentiality of the client should be protected.
     – The counselor should maintain records of the online services. If those records include copies of communications with the client, the client should be informed.
     – Procedures to follow in an emergency should be discussed. The counselor should obtain the name of a local health-care provider who can be contacted in an emergency.

Following the Simple Rules of Continuous Improvement to *Enhance Your Business, Your Life

Dan Sullivan  The Strategic Coach, Inc.      thus  Dan Sullivan The Strategic Coach, Inc.  but it’s hard to tell

Special from Bottom Line/Business    shabby common problem of successful business owners: They launch their companies with great gusto, do all of the start-up tasks themselves, watch the business begin to flourish and then arrive at a point where it seems impossible to reach higher levels of success.

I call this hitting the “Ceiling of Complexity.” You know you’ve hit it if you’re still doing everything yourself — filing, sending out invoices, working with clients — and feel as if you’re being pulled in too many different directions to be effective in any one of them.

Key: It’s where stress, frustration and fatigue are constant and increasingly nagging companions.

The good news is that you can change your work habits and break through the Ceiling — achieving greater success personally and professionally. Here’s how…

Identify your “Unique Ability.” By now, it’s clear that there’s something about you and the way you run your business that sets you apart from the crowd. It’s made up of the activities you absolutely love to do and have a unique talent for.

Extreme examples: Wayne Gretzky is uniquely skilled in hockey… Bill Gates is a passionate computer software genius… Warren Buffett has a special talent and apparent love for the art of investing.

To identify your Unique Ability, think about…

Something you love doing so much that you could do it all day, every day, and feel energized rather than exhausted by it.

Something that comes naturally to you and is relatively easy to do.

An activity at which you always excel — so much so that people comment on your tremendous skill and success.

Learn to delegate duties that are not part of your Unique Ability. The most successful entrepreneurs focus exclusively on their Unique Ability and delegate almost everything else to people who have Unique Abilities in other areas.

Example: I don’t have an E-mail address or a voice mailbox — responding to customer queries isn’t my role in the organization. My Unique Abilities include generating new ideas, speaking to large groups and coaching entrepreneurs. By spending my time doing those things, I grow my business and help make it — and me — better and better.

Divide your time into Free Days, Focus Days and Buffer Days. You’ll be far more productive if you set aside time to completely relax and let go… to do research and preparation… and to engage in key results-producing business-related activities, than if you just let each day “happen” to you. Very helpful…

I teach entrepreneurs to divide their time this way: 150 days of the year are Free Days, during which they should do only what does them and the business the most good — and spend plenty of time doing things that rejuvenate them mentally, physically and spiritually… 80 days are Buffer Days used to handle the research, tasks and details of doing business… and the remaining 135 days are Focus Days devoted to the most important business-building activities.

Be “referable.” The big part of growing your business and personal excellence is to convey an attitude of respect and appreciation to those you do business with — employees as well as clients.

Demonstrate respect for other people’s schedules, goals and values, and make sure no one working with you — or for you — ever feels taken for granted. Your business will grow because employees and customers will sing your praises to anyone who will listen, and that is the best marketing tool there is. How to be referable…

Show up on time.

Do what you say you will do.

Finish what you start.

Say “please” and “thank-you.”

Get rid of your office. Offices are places where bureaucratic nonsense and piles of stuff accumulate — and where your personal productivity is often reduced.

By getting rid of your office and using meeting rooms for business that needs to be conducted behind closed doors, you’ll be able to focus on the truly productive work that will propel you and your company forward — your Unique Abilities… long-term customer relationships… and new business opportunities.

*Hard Work Isn’t Enough — How to Stand Out and Succeed

Al Ries    Special from Bottom Line/Personal    under constrllll you’re applying for a new job or shooting for a promotion. Or maybe you’re simply concerned about holding on to your current job in this shaky economy.

Four helpful strategies…

1. Focus on the person you are trying to impress. Most people think hard work is the key to success. That is rarely enough. Unless you stand out in your employer’s mind, you are just one of many competent workers.

Figure out what the employer is looking for. What is he/she likely to notice? How do you distinguish yourself from others? Here’s what to do…

Research the company on the Internet. Pay particular attention to new products and strategies, which are often outlined in press releases posted on the company’s Web site.

Check the industry press for information.

Ask about new hires — education, previous jobs, special skills, etc. Or use the Internet and industry resources mentioned above to get information.

Ask people who work for the company or a competitor about its products and strategies.

Obviously, this is important if you are applying for a new job at an unfamiliar firm, but it is also useful if you are already an employee. You may not be aware of all management’s decisions.

2. Emphasize your specialness. Do you have something the employer wants? Play it up. Or highlight something he might not have thought of and isn’t obviously looking for.

If you have a legal background, for instance, but the job description doesn’t call for one, point out how legal skills could give you an edge. It may be your powers of persuasion, analytical skills or negotiating savvy.

If something that sets you apart might be considered a liability, put a positive spin on it. If you are older, for instance, you might tout an extensive network of contacts. If you are shooting for a medical-writing slot but haven’t done much medical writing, demonstrate that you are skilled at explaining complex issues. The more clearly you define yourself, the better the impression you make.

3. Market your successes. Select an accomplishment, and play it up. Say you sold television advertising time to a client who had not advertised before. You don’t just sell advertising — you identify advertising opportunities that others overlook.

Or give yourself a label to help others zero in on your strengths.

Example: You turned a money-losing division of your company into a money maker. If you look for a new position in your company — or outside — you can label yourself a turnaround artist.

4. Hook up with a winner. Even a mediocre jockey can win a race if he/she rides a good horse. The same is true for career climbers.

If your company isn’t a winner, you are probably not going to go very far no matter how good you are. Hook up with a winning company — and a boss who is on the fast track. If your boss goes places, you will probably go along.

Signs of a winning company: Introduces products one step ahead of its competition… receives favorable press… has stock that performs well… attracts top candidates when jobs open up.

Signs of a boss on the fast track: Handles assignments central to the company’s bottom line… tackles problems of concern to senior management… is invited and contributes to important meetings.

How do you switch bosses if yours is a loser? Very carefully. Loyalty is prized — naked ambition is not.

Explain to your current boss that you want to change departments so you can broaden your experience. The key is to make it look like a learning experience for you — a way to make yourself more versatile and productive — rather than a way to ditch your boss.

Whatever you do, don’t spread gossip or badmouth your boss or employer. Negative talk — and its source — has a way of getting back to the boss.

*How to Get What You Want in Life, Lessons from History’s Experts

But this is not the same   How to Get What You Want in Life, Lessons from History’s Experts

/same title but by   Robert Greene   – How to Get What You Want in Life, Lessons from History’s Experts, robert green      same?  Overlap?

reat strategists as different as Queen Elizabeth I, Machiavelli, Sun Tzu and Henry Kissinger have all operated according to similar underlying principles — the rules of power. Knowing how to use power effectively — whether in the boardroom or the rec room — is the key to getting what you want.

I have studied thousands of years of history, looking for the universal laws behind the achievements of those who have successfully transformed their will into action. Here is what I learned…

Say less than necessary. The less you say, the more profound, mysterious — and powerful — you appear.

Short answers and silences put others on the defensive, forcing them to jump in and fill the silence, thereby revealing information about themselves — and their weaknesses.

The more you say, the more likely you’ll say something foolish.

French king Louis XIV always had two advisers argue different sides of an issue and always ended the discussion by saying, “I shall see.” Louis never let anyone know what he was thinking. Therefore no one could ever tell him what they thought he wanted to hear. Result: He terrified his underlings and kept them under his thumb.

Henry Kissinger once returned a report to a subordinate with these curt seven words, Is this the best you can do? The writer reworked and polished the report, re-submitted it and got back the same note. Again he rewrote and improved the report, only to get the same response. Damn it, the official finally wrote, this is the best I can do. Kissinger replied, Okay, I’ll read it this time.

Guard your reputation. Nothing is more powerful than your reputation. Creating and controlling a reputation exaggerates your strengths. If you’re known for achievement, people expect those things from you and will go out of their way to make it happen.

Build a reputation by focusing on a single quality, such as honesty, diplomacy or awe-inspiring efficiency.

If you’ve already soiled your reputation, it’s hard to regain it — but not impossible. Associate with those who have the reputation you want.

Another way to improve your reputation is to subtly destroy someone else’s views. A bold attack will give you a reputation for being vengeful. But poke a few holes in someone else’s opinion, and public opinion will do the rest.

Remember — a reputation is something you give yourself. If you don’t like it, change it.

Example: JP Morgan and Henry Frick were symbols of greed and ruthlessness in the 19th century. But once they began collecting art, they permanently linked their names to the reputations of Da Vinci and Rembrandt. Today they’re remembered as much for being great art collectors as robber barons.

Avoid the unhappy and unlucky. Some people bring misfortune to themselves through their own destructive behavior. If you try to change them, it’s more likely you’ll be changed — infected by their damaging emotions and ways of thinking… or at least frustrated.

Positive qualities are infectious. Some people draw prosperity upon themselves by good cheer and natural buoyancy.

Never associate with those who share your defects. They will reinforce everything that holds you back. If you are sullen, seek out the happy. If you are shy, force yourself to befriend the outgoing. You’re judged by your peers — make sure they have the qualities you want to develop.

Example: Napoleon was a rough peasant with a bad temper, but his minister Talleyrand was a gracious aristocrat with courtly manners. Napoleon kept Talleyrand around to smooth out his rough edges.

Transform weakness into power. Don’t fight for honor’s sake. Deprive your foe of the satisfaction of defeating you. Giving in conceals power. It makes your foe complacent and gives you time to recoup and work on ways to undermine him/her.

People who care about showing their authority are easily undermined by the giving-in tactic. Outward submission makes them feel important, making them easier targets later for counterattack.

Don’t sacrifice long-term maneuverability for short-lived martyrdom. If you stay firm inside but bend on the outside, you will confuse your adversary.

Example: In ancient China, King Gou Jian lost a major battle to the ruler of Wu. Instead of fleeing, he surrendered, gave his conqueror his riches and went to work for him as a stable hand for three years. Finally, Gou Jian was freed. He raised an army and, using the knowledge he had gained about his opponent, attacked and defeated him.

Disarm and infuriate with the mirror effect. Acting like someone else — whether it is a boss, peer or opponent — is what I call the mirror effect. Like a chameleon, assume the colors of your environment so no one can touch you.

Mirroring others will give them the feeling that you share their thoughts and goals. Everyone is consumed by his own ego. Try to impose your own ego and you meet resistance. But holding up a mirror makes others see what they want to see.

Feed the fantasies of others by finding out what they like and making those tastes your own. Put books by some of your boss’s favorite writers on your bookshelf. Don’t lecture people about their failings — they won’t listen. If you mirror their behavior, they will either ignore you or think about their own actions.

Example: In ancient Greece, the general Alcibiades was indulgent and unprincipled. But whenever he met Socrates he mirrored the philosopher’s behavior — eating simply and taking long walks to discuss the meaning of life and virtue. Socrates wasn’t totally fooled, but he was won over by Alcibiades. Socrates became an ardent supporter and even risked his life in battle to save Alcibiades.

Never appear perfect. Looking better than others is dangerous.  People will become envious and look for ways to trip you up. When others envy you, they will work against you.

Weed out envy before it takes root. Appear unambitious to your colleagues. Make power seem like at least something of a burden and sacrifice — something imposed upon you.  The appearance of self-sacrifice turns envy to pity.  People will feel bad for imposing on you instead of resenting you for what you have.

Display some defects — admitting to harmless vices will let you disarm people. Self-deprecating humor is a good way to disarm others.

Example: George Washington refused to keep the position of commander in chief of the American army. He also resisted the presidency. People who would normally resent someone with so much power urged him to take more.

— to improve your memory – only fair:

Keeping your memory sharp
•  When you meet someone, imagine the person’s name written on his or her forehead, says Fred Chernow, author of “The Sharper Mind.” This way, you hear the name as well as see it, doubling the likelihood that you’ll remember it.
•  Talk aloud when you put down your keys or glasses, for instance, and want to remember the location. Tell yourself exactly where you put them. Later, you’ll remember hearing your voice.
•  Exercise your brain at what would otherwise be idle moments. Memorize the license plates of surrounding cars when stuck in traffic. Or start at 100 and count back by 7.
•  Vary your mental workout. Unfamiliar situations and challenges stimulate the brain. Try tying your shoe laces or brushing your teeth with your left hand if you’re right-handed.
•  Actively observe what you want to learn. Create a mental snapshot of the information that you wish to remember, adding details to give this image personal meaning. Link your mental snapshots together.
•  Minimize stress to maximize memory: Prepare ahead, balance work and leisure, set realistic expectations and take relaxation breaks at regular intervals.
•  Stimulate your brain to keep it fit: Do crosswords and other kinds of puzzles, read or challenge yourself intellectually.
•  Start a healthful brain diet: Drink six glasses of water each day, eat low-fat foods and plenty of fruits and vegetables, avoid fried foods and take the vitamins E and C. If you smoke, quit. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.

`/Rumsfeld’s Rules
Advice on government, business and life.
By Donald Rumsfeld

The Wall Street Journal, Monday, January 29, 2001

Many of these rules, reflections and quotations came from my role as chairman of the “transition team” for President Ford and my service as White House chief of staff. Others came from experiences as a U.S. naval aviator, a member of Congress, ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, secretary of defense, presidential Middle East envoy, business executive, chairman of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Threat Commission, and other experiences.

These reflections and quotations have been gathered over the past 40 years. Credit is given where known. As the quotation has it, “If it’s not true, it’s still well founded.” — Unknown

Serving in the White House
(for the White House chief of staff and senior staff)

  • Don’t accept the post or stay unless you have an understanding with the president that you’re free to tell him what you think “with the bark off” and you have the courage to do it.
  • Visit with your predecessors from previous administrations. They know the ropes and can help you see around some corners. Try to make original mistakes, rather than needlessly repeating theirs.
  • Don’t begin to think you’re the president. You’re not. The Constitution provides for only one.
  • In the execution of presidential decisions work to be true to his views, in fact and tone.
  • Know that the immediate staff and others in the administration will assume that your manner, tone and tempo reflect the president’s.
  • Learn to say “I don’t know.” If used when appropriate, it will be often.
  • If you foul up, tell the president and correct it fast. Delay only compounds mistakes.
  • Walk around. If you are invisible, the mystique of the president’s office may perpetuate inaccurate impressions about you or the president, to his detriment. After all, you may not be as bad as they’re saying.
  • In our system leadership is by consent, not command. To lead, a president must persuade. Personal contacts and experiences help shape his thinking. They can be critical to his persuasiveness and thus to his leadership.
  • Be precise. A lack of precision is dangerous when the margin of error is small.
  • Preserve the president’s options. He may need them.
  • It is easier to get into something than to get out of it.
  • Don’t divide the world into “them” and “us.” Avoid infatuation with or resentment of the press, the Congress, rivals, or opponents. Accept them as facts. They have their jobs and you have yours.
  • Amid all the clutter, beyond all the obstacles, aside from all the static, are the goals set. Put your head down, do the best job possible, let the flak pass, and work toward those goals.
  • Don’t say “the White House wants.” Buildings can’t want.
  • Leave the president’s family business to him. You will have plenty to do without trying to manage the first family. They are likely to do fine without your help.
  • Make decisions about the president’s personal security. He can overrule you, but don’t ask him to be the one to counsel caution.
  • Being vice president is difficult. Don’t make it tougher.
  • Don’t automatically obey presidential directives if you disagree or if you suspect he hasn’t considered key aspects of the issue.
  • The price of being close to the president is delivering bad news. You fail him if you don’t tell him the truth. Others won’t do it.
  • You and the White House staff must be and be seen to be above suspicion. Set the right example.
  • The role of White House chief of staff is that of a “javelin catcher.” — Jack Watson
  • Don’t speak ill of your predecessors or successors. You didn’t walk in their shoes.
  • Remember the public trust. Strive to preserve and enhance the integrity of the office of the presidency. Pledge to leave it stronger than when you came.
  • Don’t blame the boss. He has enough problems.

Keeping Your Bearings in the White House

  • Enjoy your time in public service. It may well be one of the most interesting and challenging times of your life.
  • Don’t think of yourself as indispensable or infallible. As Charles de Gaulle said, the cemeteries of the world are full of indispensable men.
  • Let your family, staff and friends know that you’re still the same person, despite all the publicity and notoriety that accompanies your position.
  • Have a deputy and develop a successor. Don’t be consumed by the job or you’ll risk losing your balance. Keep your mooring lines to the outside world — family, friends, neighbors, people out of government and people who may not agree with you.
  • When asked for your views, by the press or others, remember that what they really want to know is the president’s views.
  • Most of the 50 or so invitations you receive each week come from people inviting the president’s chief of staff, not you. If you doubt that, ask your predecessor how many he received last week.
  • Keep your sense of humor. As Gen. Joe Stillwell said, “The higher a monkey climbs, the more you see of his behind.”
  • Be yourself. Follow your instincts. Success depends, at least in part, on the ability to “carry it off.”
  • Know that the amount of criticism you receive may correlate somewhat to the amount of publicity you receive.
  • If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much.
  • From where you sit, the White House may look as untidy as the inside of a stomach. As is said of the legislative process, sausage making and policy making shouldn’t be seen close-up. Don’t let that panic you. Things may be going better than they look from the inside.
  • Be able to resign. It will improve your value to the president and do wonders for your performance.
  • If you are lost — “climb, conserve, and confess.” — U.S. Navy SNJ Flight Manual

Doing the Job in the White House

  • Your performance depends on your people. Select the best, train them, and back them. When errors occur, give sharper guidance. If errors persist or if the fit feels wrong, help them move on. The country cannot afford amateur hour in the White House.
  • You will launch many projects but have time to finish only a few. So think, plan, develop, launch and tap good people to be responsible. Give them authority and hold them accountable. Trying to do too much yourself creates a bottleneck.
  • Think ahead. Don’t let day-to-day operations drive out planning.
  • Plan backward as well as forward. Set objectives and trace back to see how to achieve them. You may find that no path can get you there. Plan forward to see where your steps will take you, which may not be clear or intuitive.
  • Don’t “overcontrol” like a novice pilot. Stay loose enough from the flow that you can observe, calibrate and refine.
  • A president needs multiple sources of information. Avoid excessively restricting the flow of paper, people, or ideas to the president, though you must watch his time. If you overcontrol, it will be your “regulator” that controls, not his. Only by opening the spigot fairly wide, risking that some of his time may be wasted, can his “regulator” take control.
  • If in doubt, move decisions up to the president.
  • When you raise issues with the president, try to come away with both that decision and also a precedent. Pose issues so as to evoke broader policy guidance. This can help to answer a range of similar issues likely to arise later.
  • See that the president, the cabinet and the staff are informed. If cut out of the information flow, their decisions may be poor, not made, or not confidently or persuasively implemented.
  • Don’t allow people to be excluded from a meeting or denied an opportunity to express their views because their views differ from the president’s views, the views of person who calls the meeting, or your views. The staff system must have integrity and discipline.
  • When the president is faced with a decision, be sure he has the recommendations of all appropriate people, or that he realizes he does not have their views and is willing to accept the consequence. They will be out of sync, unhappy and less effective if they feel they are or are seen as having been “cut out.”
  • Don’t be a bottleneck. If a matter is not a decision for the president or you, delegate it. Force responsibility down and out. Find problem areas, add structure, and delegate. The pressure is to do the reverse. Resist it.
  • If the staff lacks policy guidance against which to test decisions, their decisions will be random.
  • One of your tasks is to separate the “personal” from the “substantive.” The two can become confused, especially if someone rubs the president wrong.
  • Test ideas in the marketplace. You learn from hearing a range of perspectives. Consultation helps engender the support decisions need to be successfully implemented.
  • If a prospective presidential approach can’t be explained clearly enough to be understood well, it probably hasn’t been thought through well enough. If not well understood by the American people, it probably won’t “sail” anyway. Send it back for further thought.
  • Many people around the president have sizeable egos before entering government, some with good reason. Their new positions will do little to moderate their egos.
  • Move decisions out to the cabinet and agencies. Strengthen them by moving responsibility, authority and accountability their direction.
  • Control your time. If you’re working off your in-box, you’re working off the priorities of others. Be sure the staff is working on what you move to them from the president, or the president will be reacting, not leading.
  • Look for what’s missing. Many advisers can tell a president how to improve what’s proposed or what’s gone amiss. Few are able to see what isn’t there.
  • Think of dealing with Congress as a “revolving door.” You’ll be back to today’s opponents for their help tomorrow. Presidential proposals will need a member of Congress’s support on some issue, at some time, regardless of philosophy, party or their positions on other issues. Don’t allow White House links to members to be cut because they may disagree on some or even many issues.
  • Work continuously to trim the White House staff from your first day to your last. All the pressures are to the contrary.
  • Don’t do or say things you would not like to see on the front page of the Washington Post.

Serving in Government

  • Public servants are paid to serve the American people. Do it well.
  • Congress, the press and the bureaucracy too often focus on how much money or effort is spent, rather than whether the money or effort actually achieves the announced goal.
  • It is very difficult to spend “federal (the taxpayers’) dollars” so that the intended result is achieved.
  • Beware when any idea is promoted primarily because it is “bold, exciting, innovative and new.” There are many ideas that are “bold, exciting, innovative and new,” but also foolish.
  • The federal government should be the last resort, not the first. Ask if a potential program is truly a federal responsibility or whether it can better be handled privately, by voluntary organizations, or by local or state governments.
  • As former Rep. Tom Curtis of Missouri said, “Public money drives out private money.”
  • Strive to make proposed solutions as self-executing as possible. As the degree of discretion increases, so too do bureaucracy, delay and expense.
  • Presidential leadership needn’t always cost money. Look for low- and no-cost options. They can be surprisingly effective.
  • Include others. As former Sen. Pat Moynihan (D., N.Y.) said, “Stubborn opposition to proposals often has no other basis than the complaining question, ‘Why wasn’t I consulted?’ ”
  • Watch for the “not invented here” syndrome.
  • “The atmosphere in which social legislation is considered is not a friend of truth.” — Pat Moynihan
  • If in doubt, don’t.
  • If still in doubt, do what’s right.
  • Treat each federal dollar as if it was hard earned. It was — by a taxpayer.
  • “Try to analyze situations intelligently, anticipate problems and move swiftly to solve them. However, when you’re up to your ears in alligators, it is difficult to remember that the reason you’re there is to drain the swamp.” — Unknown
  • “In Washington, D.C., the size of a farewell party may be directly proportional to the honoree’s new position and their prospective ability to dispense largess.” — D.G. Cross
  • “Every government looking at the actions of another government and trying to explain them always exaggerates rationality and conspiracy, and underestimates incompetency and fortuity.” — Silberman’s Law of Diplomacy, U.S. Circuit Court Judge Laurence Silberman

Politics, Congress and the Press

  • First rule of politics: you can’t win unless you’re on the ballot.
  • Second rule: If you run, you may lose.
  • And if you tie, you do not win.
  • Politics is human beings; it’s addition rather than subtraction.
  • “The winner is not always the swiftest, surest or smartest. It’s the one willing to get up at 5 a.m. and go to the plant gate to meet the workers.” — Unknown
  • In politics, every day is filled with numerous opportunities for serious error.  Enjoy it.
  • The most underestimated risk for a politician is overexposure.
  • When someone with a rural accent says, “I don’t know much about politics,” zip up your pockets.
  • If you try to please everybody, somebody’s not going to like it.
  • Don’t necessarily avoid sharp edges. Occasionally they are necessary to leadership.
  • “The oil can is mightier than the sword.” — former Sen. Everett Dirksen (R., Ill.)
  • Arguments of convenience lack integrity and inevitably trip you up.
  • Remember where you came from.
  • Members of the House and the Senate are not there by accident. Each managed to get there for some reason. Learn what it was and you will know something important about them, about our country and about the American people.
  • With the press there is no “off the record.”
  • “There are only three responses to questions from the press: (1) ‘I know and will tell you’; (2) ‘I know and I can’t tell you’; and (3) ‘I don’t know.’ ” — Dan Rather

For the Secretary of Defense

  • The secretary of defense is not a super general or admiral. His task is to exercise civilian control over the department for the commander in chief and the country.
  • Reserve the right to get into anything, and exercise it. Make your deputies and staff realize that, although many responsibilities are delegated, no one should be surprised when the secretary engages an important issue.
  • Manage the interaction between the Pentagon and the White House. Unless you establish a narrow channel for the flow of information and “tasking” back and forth, the process can quickly become chaotic.
  • Normal management techniques may not work in the department. When pushing responsibility downward, be sure not to contribute to a weakening of the cohesion of the services; what cohesion exists has been painfully achieved over the decades.
  • When cutting staff at the Pentagon, don’t eliminate the thin layer that assures civilian control.
  • Avoid public spats. When a department argues with other government agencies in the press, it reduces the president’s options.
  • Establish good relations between the departments of Defense and State, the National Security Council, CIA and the Office of Management and Budget.
  • Be sure key U.S. ambassadors are informed on defense activities in their countries.
  • Develop a personal relationship with the chairman and each of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. They are almost always outstanding public servants. In time of crisis, those relationships can be vital.
  • “If you get the objectives right, a lieutenant can write the strategy.” — Gen. George Marshall
  • Napoleon was asked, “Who do you consider to be the greatest generals?” He responded, “The victors.”

On Business

  • When you initiate new activities, find things you are currently doing that you can discontinue — whether reports, activities, etc. It works, but you must force yourself to do it. Always keep in mind your “teeth-to-tail ratio.”
  • Watch the growth of middle-level management. Don’t automatically fill vacant jobs. Leave some positions unfilled for six to eight months to see what happens. You will find you won’t need to fill some of them.
  • Reduce the layers of management. They put distance between the top of an organization and the customers.
  • Find ways to decentralize. Move decision-making authority down and out. Encourage a more entrepreneurial approach.
  • Prune — prune businesses, products, activities, people. Do it annually.
  • Know your customers!
  • Develop a few key themes and stick to them. It works. Repetition is necessary. “Quality.” “Customers.” “Innovation.” “Service.” Whatever!
  • That which you require be reported on to you will improve, if you are selective. How you fashion your reporting system announces your priorities and sets the institution’s priorities.
  • People do better in staff jobs if they have had operational experience. It helps to look at things from others’ perspectives.
  • Reduce the number of lawyers. They are like beavers — they get in the middle of the stream and dam it up.
  • Beware of the argument that “this is a period for investment; improvements will come in the out years.” The tension between the short term and long term can be constructive, but there is no long term without a short term.
  • Too often management recommends plans that look like Bob Hope’s nose or a hockey stick. The numbers go down the first year or so and then up in the later years. If you accept hockey-stick plans, you will find they will be proposed year after year.
  • Don’t let the complexity of a large company mask the need for performance. Bureaucracy is a conspiracy to bring down the big. And it can. You may need to be large to compete in the world stage, but you need to find ways to avoid allowing that size to mask poor performance.
  •  “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” — Old military axiom
  • Remember: A’s hire A’s and B’s hire C’s.
  •  “The advantage of a free market is that it allows millions of decision-makers to respond individually to freely determined prices, allocating resources — labor, capital and human ingenuity — in a manner that can’t be mimicked by a central plan, however brilliant the central planner.” — Friedrich A. Hayek

/ put this on saven   Saving gasoline:   Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground
temperature is still co ld. Remember that all service stations have their
storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the
gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon
or in the evening….your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum
business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel
and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the
service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you’re filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast
mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low,
middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby
minimizing the vapors that are creat ed while you are pumping. All hoses at
the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some
other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being
sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less
worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL
or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank
the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you
can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This
roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it
minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every
truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is
actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage
tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up–most likely the gasoline is
being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some
of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.  Hope this will help you
get the most value for your money.

/To boost energy.      Is this on ga?   No, in fact all of ‘health’ is shot

   By  Kenneth cooper      date

1. Eat less but more frequently. Consuming large meals (more than 1,000 calories per sitting) makes you feel sluggish because your body’s resources are directed toward digesting all that food.

Instead, graze on small meals and snacks that contain a mix of carbohydrates and protein (but little fat) to provide a steady stream of fuel. Examples: Yogurt smoothie (one cup light nonfat yogurt, one-half cup fat-free milk, one-half peach, blended)… peanut butter and banana sandwich (one slice whole-wheat bread, one-half tablespoon peanut butter, one-half banana, sliced)… fruity cottage cheese (one-half cup 1% low-fat cottage cheese, one-half cup pineapple chunks in juice, drained).

2. Exercise. The health benefits of exercise are well known, but many people tell me they continue to exercise year after year because it makes them feel good and gives them more energy. I recommend at least 30 minutes of sustained activity five times a week. The best activities for most people tend to be brisk walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and aerobic dance.

exercise

3. Take a multivitamin. In a clinical trial, people who took multivitamins daily not only had improved immunity against infectious diseases but also had more energy. In general, it is best to get vitamins from food, but many people don’t get the necessary amounts, so I suggest taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement daily.

4. Prevent dehydration. Consuming an inadequate amount of fluids, particularly if it’s hot outside or you’re exercising, can deplete energy and lead to weakness, dizziness and headaches. Drink at least six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water daily. On days that you exert yourself to the point of perspiring, increase that to up to 13 glasses.

5. Watch what you drink. Drink no more than one caffeinated beverage a day. Coffee, tea, cola and other caffeinated beverages provide a temporary energy boost, but energy levels plunge when the stimulant’s effects wear off.

Caffeinated drinks also have a diuretic effect, which may cause you to lose fluids because you urinate more frequently.

Also, limit alcohol consumption to no more than one drink a day — any more can lead to fatigue.

6. Practice the “relaxation response.” This technique, developed by Herbert Benson, MD, of Harvard University, has been shown to reduce blood pressure and heart rate. For me, doing this for just five minutes in the middle of the day is rejuvenating.

How to do it: Sit in a chair in a quiet room. Close your eyes. Starting with your feet, begin to relax your muscles, progressively moving up the body to the top of the head. While you do this, breathe in slowly and naturally through your nose and out through your mouth. As you exhale, silently repeat a focus word or phrase that has meaning for you, such as “peace.” Push away distracting thoughts by focusing on your breathing and the word you have chosen to repeat.

For more information, read The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, MD (HarperTorch).

take naps

7. Take naps. Surveys show that most Americans don’t get as much sleep as they need (most of us require seven to eight hours a night). Daily naps of 15 to 20 minutes are energizing — and longer naps can help you catch up if you are sleep deprived. I sleep only five to six hours a night, so I often take a two-hour nap on Saturdays.

8. Don’t immerse yourself in bad news. The glut of negative information coming our way from TV, radio, newspapers, the Internet, etc. can hurt the psyche, causing stress and fatigue. Reduce the amount of time you spend watching, listening to or reading the news, and focus on things that bring you joy.

9. Be social. Studies show that isolation can lead to depression and early death. We gain energy by being with others (both humans and animals). Make time for family, friends and pets.

10. Explore your creativity. Boredom leads to a lack of motivation and energy. Finding a creative outlet that absorbs you is invigorating. Developing your creativity also teaches you new skills… challenges your brain… and leads to the release of endorphins, feel-good brain chemicals. Take up a new hobby… learn a musical instrument… take on an unusual project at work. Added benefit: Mentally stimulating activities can lower your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

11. Laugh. Laughter appears to release endorphins just as creative pursuits do. By improving your outlook, you’ll feel more energetic and ready to tackle life. Helpful: Watch funny movies… read cartoons… share humorous stories and jokes with friends.

laugh

12. Think young. To a large extent, your mindset dictates how much energy you have as you age. If you expect the worst, you’re likely to feel tired and unwell. If you expect to stay vital, you’ll fight off disease that can sap energy and well-being — and you’ll add years to your life.

`/Napoleon’s Principles of War ///  [can napoleon’s principles of war be applied to business? – Search  yes]

Condensed by   Major Mark D Hardison    dup on mil

Objective
Keep your goals clearly in mind. Every act should have the objective as it’s end.

Simplicity
Avoid complicated schemes. The less that “goes”, the less that can go wrong.

Control
One person in charge at each level; and each answers to one above him. (Unity of Command)

Offensive
Control the enemy; force him to attack on your terms.
If you must defend; do so where you chose, make the enemy attack where you want.

Maneuver
Move quickly and precisely.
Your forces need to move faster than your enemy can react, and at his weakest point.

Mass
Concentrate as much power against the objective as possible.

Economy of Forces
Use as little force as possible against non-critical objectives.

Surprise
Keep the enemy off balance, unaware of your next move. Use surprise as a force multiplier.

Security
Keep the enemy unaware of your plans, location, and capability.
Do not allow the enemy to surprise you.   #

THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU:

  1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.
  2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.
  3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste … and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.
  4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you  to remove it.
  5. If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.
  6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy.
  7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom — and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.
  8. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable . But understand this: I don’t take a day  off because of bad weather.
  9. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don’t take me up on it.)
  10. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always  check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.
  11. Here’s a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms.
  12. You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me.
  13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com <http://faketv. com/> .)

MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU:

  1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.
  2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.
  3. I’ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back to what  he was doing. It’s human nature.
  4. I’m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?
  5. I love looking in your windows. I’m looking for signs that you’re home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I’d like. I’ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.
  6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It’s easier than you think to look up your address.
  7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it’s an invitation.
  8. If you don’t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I  hit the jackpot and walk right in.
  9. Don’t put a mourning wreath or some other sign of bereavement on your front door. We check obituaries and funeral times, and if something looks promising we’ll hit during the funeral. Do you really need a double tragedy?

  1. For cleaning smelly hands after chopping onions or garlic, just rub them on a stainless steel spoon. The steel is supposed to absorb the odor.
  2. Fresh coffee beans can also absorb nasty odors from your hands.
  3. If you happen to over-salt a pot of soup, just drop in a peeled potato. The potato will absorb the excess salt.
  4. When boiling eggs, add a pinch of salt to keep the shells from cracking.
  5. Never put citrus fruits or tomatoes in the fridge. The low temperatures degrade the aroma and flavor.
  6. To clean cast iron cook wear, don’t use detergents. Just scrub them with salt and a clean, dry paper towel.
  7. Will milk curdle if it is allowed to boil? It turns out that this age-old piece of wisdom isn’t true, after all. Milk that has been boiled is perfectly safe to consume.
  8. To clean an electric kettle with calcium build-up on the heating element, boil a mixture of half white vinegar and half water, then empty.
  9. When storing empty airtight containers, throw in a pinch of salt to keep them from getting stinky.
  10. If you are making gravy and accidentally burn it, just pour it into a clean pan and continue cooking it. Add sugar a little at a time, tasting as you go to avoid over-sugaring it. The sugar will cancel out the burned taste.
  11. Burned a pot of rice? Just place a piece of white bread on top of the rice for 5-10 minutes to draw out the burned flavour. Be careful not to scrape the burned pieces off of the bottom of the pan when serving the rice.
  12. Before you chop chilli peppers, rub a little vegetable oil into your hands and your skin won’t absorb the spicy chilli oil.
  13. If you aren’t sure how fresh your eggs are, place them in about four inches of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If only one end tips up, the egg is less fresh and should be used soon. If it floats, it’s past the fresh stage.
  14. To banish ants from the kitchen, find out where they are coming in and cover the hole with petroleum jelly. Ants won’t trek through the jelly. If they are coming under a door, draw a line on the floor with chalk. The little bugs also won’t cross a line of chalk.
  15. Before making popcorn on the stove or in an air popper, soak the kernels in water for 10 minutes. Drain the water, then pop as normal. The additional moisture helps the popcorn pop up quicker and fluffier with fewer old maids.
  16. Don’t store your bananas in a bunch or in a fruit bowl with other fruits. Separate your bananas and place each in a different location. Bananas release gases which cause fruits (including other bananas) to ripen quickly. Separating them will keep them fresh longer.
  17. To keep potatoes from budding in the bag, put an apple in with them.
  18. If you manage to have some leftover wine at the end of the evening, freeze it in ice cube trays for easy addition to soups and sauces in the future.
  19. To clean crevices and corners in vases and pitchers, fill with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets. The bubbles will do the scrubbing.
  20.  After boiling pasta or potatoes, cool the water and use it to water your house plants. The water contains nutrients that your plants will love.
  21. When you clean your fish tank, the water you drain can also be used to water your house plants. The nitrogen and phosphorus in fish droppings make aquarium water a great fertilizer.
  22. When defrosting meat from the freezer, pour some vinegar over it. Not only does it tenderize the meat; it will also bring down the freezing temperature of the meat and cause it to thaw quicker.
  23. The substance in onions that causes your eyes to water is located in the root cluster of the onion. Cut this part out in a cone shape, with the largest part of the cone around the exterior root section.
  24. Taking the top layer off of an onion can also reduce the amount of eye-watering misery.
  25. Toothpaste is a great silver cleaner.
  26. Baking soda isn’t as effective a deodorizer for the fridge as that baking soda company would like you to believe. Activated charcoal is much better at absorbing fridge and freezer odours.
  27. Baking soda is an extremely effective cleaner, though. Use it with vinegar to deodorize drains and clean stovetops and sinks.
  28. A favourite tip of thousands of grandmas: when you nick your finger while cutting veggies, wait until the bleeding stops and paint on a layer of clear nail polish. It will keep juices out of the wound and won’t fall off into the spaghetti sauce like a bandage.
  29. The jury is still out on what to put in the bag of brown sugar to keep it from going hard: a slice of apple, a piece of bread, and a shard of a terra cotta pot have all been used.
  30. Got a nasty invisible splinter from your kitchen tools? Put a piece of adhesive tape on the area and then pull it off to remove the splinter.
  31. When you burn yourself in the kitchen, just spread mustard on the affected area. Leave it for a while and it will ease the pain and prevent blistering.
  32. For aluminium pans that are looking dull, just boil some apple peels in them. This will brighten up the aluminium and make your house smell yummy.
  33. To keep cookies fresh, savvy grannies like to put some crumpled-up tissue paper in the bottom of the cookie jar.
  34. If your salt is clumping up, put a few grains of rice in with it to absorb excess moisture.
  35. To clean fruit stains off of your fingers, rub them with a fresh, peeled potato. White vinegar can also do the trick.
  36. Keep iceberg lettuce fresh in the fridge by wrapping it in a clean, dry paper towel and storing lettuce and paper towel in a sealed baggie in the fridge.
  37. If your loaf of bread is starting to go stale, just put a piece of fresh celery in the bag and close it back up. For some reason, this restores a fresh taste and texture to the bread.
  38. Always keep an aloe vera plant in your kitchen. It’s invaluable when you scrape your arm or burn your finger. Just break off a leaf and rub the gel from the inside on the injury.
  39. When making a soup, sauce, or casserole that ends up too fatty or greasy, drop in an ice cube. The ice will attract the fat, which you can then scoop out.
  40. To reuse cooking oil without tasting whatever was cooked in the oil previously, cook a 1/4 piece of ginger in the oil. It will remove any remaining flavours and odours.
  41. If your milk always goes bad before you can finish it, try adding a pinch of salt to the carton when you first open it. It will stay fresh days longer.
  42. Water that has been boiled and allowed to cool will freeze faster than water from the tap. This comes in handy when you’re having a party and need ice pronto.
  43. Remove tea or coffee stains from your fine china by mixing up a paste of baking soda, lemon juice, and cream of tartar. Rub it over the stains and they’ll come off easily.
  44. If two drinking glasses become stuck together after stacking, it’s not impossible to unstick them. Just put ice in the inner glass and dunk the outer glass in warm water. The warm glass will expand and the cold glass will contract, making the glasses separate easily.
  45. For splinters under the fingernail, soaking the affected finger in a bowl of milk with a piece of bread in it is said to draw out the splinter.
  46. Did grandpa ever give you a drink of cola for an upset tummy? It turns out that this is actually a pretty effective remedy. The sugar and carbonation can soothe many tummy problems – but it can also exacerbate others.
  47. Putting salty bacon on a boil is said to draw the poison out of boils.
  48. To help old wooden drawers (without runners) open and close smoothly, rub a candle on the tracks.
  49. A cotton ball soaked in white vinegar and applied to a fresh bruise will reduce the darkness of the bruise and help it disappear sooner.
  50. Drinking cranberry juice and eating blueberries regularly will help stave off urinary tract infections.

/do I have this on youth?   Feel-good teaching has created a generation of high school seniors with no concept of reality and set them up for failure.   They don’t know that:

  1. Many parts of life are not fair.
  2. The world won’t care about your self-esteem. It will expect you to accomplish something.
  3. If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
  4. Low-paid work is not ‘menial’, it’s opportunity.
  5. If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault.  Don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
  6. Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now.  They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to how cool you thought you were.  So before you save the rain forest, try delousing the closet in your room.
  7. In some schools, they give you as many times as you want to get the right answer.  This is nothing like real life.
  8. Few employers are interested in helping you find yourself.
  9. Be nice to nerds – chances are you’ll be working for one.

Top 10 Tips From Dr. Phil About Raising Teens

tyler jacobson

Tyler Jacobson    January 3, 2016    9 comments    3 min read    If you are in the thick of raising teenagers, you need all the help you can get. Dr. Phil is one great, straight-shooting, no nonsense resource. Here is a round-up of some of his best advice.

  1. Act Like A Parent. Dr. Phil is a constant advocate for being a parent first and foremost. He does not subscribe to the notion our teenagers should be our friends.
  2. Take Care of Yourself. Just remember you cannot be what your teen needs if you do not have anything to give them. Go to the gym, take a poetry class, or whatever helps you relax but fill your well so you have the energy and clarity to deal with your troubled teen.
  3. Improve Communication. No matter what your teen’s issues, you are never going to go wrong improving communication. Communication will take time and depending on the depth of your teen’s issues, you may not have the luxury of time but try anyway.
  4. Seek Help. Sometimes as parents we hold on too tightly. By taking a step back and asking family members, clergy members, or even a trusted friend to offer their perspective can be just what Dr. Phil would order.
  5. What’s Causing The Caustic Attitude. Sometimes, taking the time to look for the underlying issues which are contributing to your teen’s behavior helps solve their issues faster. Ask yourself: What happened right before my teen changed?
  6. A History Lesson. Take an honest look at your teen’s early years. If there were trying issues, they may just now be responding to that pain. Typically trauma at a young age does not manifest until the teen years because young children do not know how to respond. Most teenagers do not know how to respond any other way than acting out but they are more capable than their younger selves.
  7. Knowing When And How To Act. After you have looked at underlying issues and early childhood trauma, you have to decide what level of intervention is necessary. Not every scenario needs professional treatment but the ones which do will not get better without it.
  8. Compromise. Now is not the time for a full-on power struggle. Knowing how and when to compromise, will help you steer your teen’s recovery.
  9. Rolling Eyes? Roll on! Dr. Phil says there is a direct relationship with how much you and your teens talk and the amount of trouble they get into. Talking to your teens is not a perfect guarantee but it does help.
  10. Be A Kid Too. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in being a parent and doing the right thing that you forget to connect with your teen on their level and in their world. If you cannot remember the last time you and your teen had fun together it’s at least six months too long.
